3 Types of 3D Animation Techniques
1. Inverse Kinematics
Most animation is created by manipulating the joints in a skeleton to give the illusion of movement. Inverse Kinematics (IK) technique in which natural body movements of a character are simulated using skeletons. Inverse Kinematics is useful in 3D animation. It simplifies the animation process and to create advanced animations with less effort. Inverse Kinematics is used as an efficient solution for rigging a character’s arms and legs.
To animate a game character like a fighting robot, artists can use inverse Kinematics to simulate its movements like making it lie down or bend on its knees.
Inverse Kinematics achieve by positioning the last bone in the bone chain, making other bones position themselves automatically.
Example: If a character’s hand is animated, then the arm and forearm will follow the continued movement like bending and rotating naturally. If you want to create animations, Inverse Kinematics is very useful like planting feet on the floor during a walk cycle. Maya and 3ds Max are commonly used tools to implement Inverse Kinematics animation.
2. Fluid Stimulation
Have you ever wondered how stunning visual in movies like erupting volcano, stormy seas or a giant waterfall are created. All this effect are achieved through dynamic fluid simulation. Fluid simulation widely used in different industries like games, films and advertisements. Fluid simulation is used for generating realistic animations of fluid bodies like fire, cloud, water, smoke, or explosions. Using fluid simulations, one can create realistic atmospheric effects, viscous fluids, pyrotechnics and more. Maya, Blender and Houdini are some of the 3D software suites used to produce fluid simulation.
3. 3D Skeletal Animation
In 3D Skeletal animation process wherein an object is animated by combining two techniques:
Surface Representation of the object in where the animator draws the object and then adds animations in that object using a set of interconnected bones in a skeleton. Skeletal animation used to animate characters and any joined objects.

Example: For animating a character in a game, the animator builds a skeleton of the human within the mesh and animates the skeleton to give the desired actions to the character.
